Stumped...

I've had this pile of fabric sitting on my shelf for over a month now - actually closer to two - and I am positively stumped.

With a capital S and a big fat exclamation point behind the D.

This is the bundle of fabric that we received for the MQG's latest fabric challenge using Riley Blake's Basics line of fabrics.  We can make ANYTHING as long as it's quilted in some way.  And I'm coming up with a big goose egg.

What do you do when quilting block rears its ugly head?  Review Pinterest for ideas?  Look through old magazines and internet bookmarks?  Ignore that sinking feeling that you are fresh out of ideas until the week before the deadline?

I think I need some bright ideas because February will be here sooner than I think...

  1. Join the club... I like these individually but they do nothing for me together... I've put it on hold and am hoping that with a looming deadline I'll have an idea in January;-) Good luck, I know you'll come up with something fabulous!!!

  2. Yup, pinterest! I try to go through my board of quilting stuff to see what I've pinned/planned to make someday that would work. And then search more...I dunno, sometimes it's rough! Hope you find some inspiration soon!

  3. I just start sketching on paper and try to come up with as many ideas as possible. For this one, I dug through some older designs and found one that I modified and plan to use (if I ever get to sew any time soon). I agree though, these fabrics are really hard to use together.

  4. I see these fabrics for the challenge made into a round pillow. Use the grey stripe as the outside ring, the darker grey and the binding and the yellow, orange and chevron as small patchwork panels for the pillow. The navy check as a big button in the middle...

  5. I tend to give myself an "assignment" to kick-start creativity. When options are boundless, you can think about things endlessly! I'll say that for this project, I can ONLY use something I've pinned, or I can ONLY use inspiration from a print source I've bought. Restrictions can help you find new solutions you didn't expect! I've always found good results from doing this c:

  6. Try to think of it abstractly. What do the colors, textures, graphics say to you. I see bright flowers standing out against a grey rainy sky.

  7. I am a Pinterest fan myself. You've got a large amount of graphics and lines in those prints. Maybe find something that compliments them? Like maybe a paper-piecing pattern of a starburst, or I've got a churn dash on my to do list and you could play with opposing colors...It's hard when you have so many possibilities. You can do it. - Kate

  8. Hm...the solid goes well with all of them. What if you appliqued something onto the solid that could be fun and bright like flip flops or umbrellas. Then the design would unify the fabrics that seem to be fighting each other. I guess I have Camille Roskelley's April Showers pattern in the back of my mind.
