Turning Fail into Fabulous...with a Giveaway!

I had some really, really good intentions for a bit of selfish sewing.  I was going to make myself a super cute skirt with flair.  Two colors of tulle flair with shimmery fabric and Heather Ross Far Far Away scrumptiousness to be exact.

"Pattern?" I chuckled.  "I don't need a pattern - I've been on a clothing roll and how hard can a simple elastic waist skirt with tulle be?"  I think we all know where this is headed...

Looks innocent and cute enough while it's lying on the ground...but people, this was NOT a cute skirt on my body. I cut the topskirt layer too big so that it gathered way too much.  As if that wasn't bad enough, I cut the 4 layers of tulle and the shimmery blue underskirt not large enough so that the amount of gathering on those layers was just...weird.  Volume was not my friend here.  But honestly, I don't really know what I was thinking to begin with.  My bottom half doesn't really need any extra volume, so even if I had executed this properly, it still probably would not have had me looking my best.

This skirt was NOT leaving my house on my person.  But all that fabric waste made my heart (and wallet) hurt.  It was just too pretty to let sit rolled into a sad ball in the bottom of my closet.  After seeing some very cute clutches and bags at our SMQG Yankee Swap this past weekend, I went searching for During Quiet Time's Ruched Happy Bag pattern and went to work.

Fabric saved and a fail turned Far Far Away fabulous!!  Even the shimmery fabric got saved as a nice decorative detail.

I was so excited about the ability to make lemonade from my lemon skirt (plus I had a TON of skirt that needed to be chopped up) that I pulled a few more colors from my stash and started a clutch factory.

And hey...did you know that today is Sew Mama Sew's Giveaway Day??  How fabulously convenient!  I've made a few and I'd like to giveaway more than one clutch - just means more chances for you to win :)

So here are the rules:  Leave a comment and tell me one of your fabric fails - or if you've been lucky enough to not have one!  Don't forget to tell me your favorite colored clutch :)  Leave a second comment if you follow my blog AND leave a third comment if you follow me on Instagram (@simplesewendipity).  I will ship internationally, so don't be shy if you're not in the United States - the more, the merrier!

The comments will close on December 12th at 8pm EST and winners will be notified on December 14th.  These would make a really cute gift for someone or (even better) a gift for yourself!  Can't wait to hear from you all and enjoy the giveaway here and at all the other link ups :)

  7. My biggest fabric fail was the classic "measure once (really quickly) and cut twice"-- ugh! hate it when I get going too fast and am not careful about where I cut. of course this was part of my coveted "Hope Valley" stash too!

  12. Well, it's a bummer that the skirt didn't turn out, but those purses are gorgeous, especially the blue one!! Fabric fail - A big bold print I bought in 1991, thinking it would make fun focal curtains for our apartment's sliding door onto the balcony. It was just garish and overpowering in execution!! lol :D

  13. I tend to forget my failures so I don't dwell on them. My biggest fault is probably not reading the directions correctly. I love the clutches.

  14. A seam ripper is my best friend. I have a fabic fail almost everytime I make something. Most recently, I lined a bag only to find out that I'd cut the lining too big.

  21. I love the yellow clutch! I hate pinning and measuring and try to get away without doing it whenever possible... that has led to a few fails over time :)

  22. I totally had a skirt fail like you. It was a stripe that I wanted to make a bias skirt out of, but the stripe was already on the bias, so I decided to cut it straight. It didn't hang or look good at all. That's why I prefer to stick to making bags and quilts and such - they don't have to fit :) erikam at alum dot wpi dot edu

My biggest fail was making a pair of lined shorts... what a nightmare!
    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  24. ha fabric fails ... hmmm almost everytime I start up the sewing machine ... sewing things left to right or once gathering a skirt at the front instead of the back .. no good ...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well leading up to actually sewing my wedding dress there were a few that were a bit ... disasters! But those were made out of thrift store bedsheets because I knew they were going to be hot messes. I've also got a layered skirt that didn't go so hot either!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I tried to make flannel pjs for my nieces last year--I thought surely a yard of fabric would be enough? Well no, and then I couldn't find more of that fabric, so lets just pretend I meant to make them modern and mix prints, shall we?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Decided to make fun pockets for a pair of pants I'm making out of very thing polyester, which quickly got eaten by my sewing machine no matter what I did...so sad. The orange/red one is delightful!

  28. So sorry the skirt didn't work, but these clutches are adorable!
I am in the middle of a fail right now, because I didn't realize that tonga treats charm squares are not accurate 5" squares. So frustrating!

  29. LOVE the green clutch. These are so lovely. My fabric fail was using a needle that had hit a pin and not changing it so when I went to sew some lovely fine fabric I coudn't figure out why the fabric and wadding from the bottom were coming through to the top and leaving a big hole. Duh - a needle with a nick(sp) on it. Leaned my lesson!

  31. I am constantly doing a fail such as winding the bobbin up too tight.
    I love the green clutch.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Those are lovely. I don't think I've ever failed so bad that I couldn't recover. I did have one baby quilt that I put one of the borders on upside down and kept going with out noticing. Since it was white-on-white, I didn't bother to fix it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. oooh, biggest fabric fail was probably the exact same thing for me - an elastic waist skirt that just was terrible! I love the blue clutch!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I follow with GFC. I like the blue pouch best, then the mustard one. x

  39. So many fails to choose from! Probably the worst was my attempt at free motion quilting when I was brand new to quilting. I had not a clue what I was doing and made such a mess. My girls didn't mind, though, and used the quilt anyway! :) I love the orange one. Wonderful save!!

  40. I cut out a border for a quilt and forgot to add 1/2" for the seams.

  41. I recently entered a charm swap and thought I was being really clever by marking my cutting mat with washi tape. Unfortunately i cut my charms to the wrong side of the washi tape making them a too small. A quick reorder and everything was fine, Measure twice cut once! Lesson learnt.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like the yellow clutch the best. My second favorite would have to be the red one. I haven't had any fabric fails that I can recall, but I've had my fair share of ripping out mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My biggest fail was not measuring myself before cutting a fabric to make a dress, and then using really good fabric and having it not fit at all (it's still in a pile - I should just use the fabric for quilts at this point!! I love the clutch with the green top. Fun! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Biggest beginner fail was buying a favorite fabric for a project without realizing I would need extra since it was a directional print! Also my cutting errors are legendary.
The Blue Clutch is my favorite! Lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I once tried to sew together an infinity scarf and ended up making a pillowcase by accident instead. Not what I had in mind!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I once sewed all the layers of a purse together. It's been sitting in my basket ever since.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I once tried to sew a flag with nylon on my machine and the fabric moved so much and wiggles around and it was terrible!

    ReplyDelete
  48. ignoring my need for a pattern and not following directions...those tend to result in failures! (and yet I can't seem to change my ways!) I love them all, green if I had to choose.

  51. I made an expensive fabric fail years ago when I forgot the "measure twice, cut once"-rule, and cut my fancy and costly wool meant to be a wintery circle skirt for myself into way too small pieces to make much of a skirt at all. I think in the end I ended up making clothes for dolls out of those pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My biggest fabric fail was accidentally laying an already-cut piece of fabric under my to-cut fabric and going through both with the rotary blade.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This comment has been removed by the author.

  54. Biggest fail lately was making a purse with a decorative zipper across the top, and somehow when all of the layers were turned right-side-out the zipper came out upside down. Impossible to fix so I quietly threw it out. Love the pouch with the orange top. Thanks for sharing with us!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I cute a pattern one size too small for my daughters holiday dress! I love the clutch w/ the gold top! thanks!

  57. I spent hours making the headpiece of an elephant costume for my son. It did not fit. I gave up and bought a pirate costume on Amazon. I love all of them but the blue is my favorite.

  58. I'm not good enough or brave enough to attempt sewing without a pattern (and even then, I can mess up.) But my biggest fail was a Halloween costume for my daughter that was hideous! I like all of the pouches, but I think I like the red one the best.

  60. My worst fabric fail was when I tried curved piecing. I took a class and all I got done was the worst two blocks. They were uneven and not one seam matched.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Oh my gosh, I don't even know. I've definitely made a bad skirt.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I've made quilts that couldn't be pressed flat enough to quilt, and blouses with necks too small to fit anyone's neck, and totes with the lining inside out . . . but one of these days I'll get something right, lol. I love your bags, the green is my favorite. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. This year I had a terrible fail while making my daughter a mermaid costume... I wasn't paying enough attention, didn't clean my table up enough and cut through her younger sisters quilt top. I'm salvaging what I can and just winging it with the fabric I have left.

  65. My biggest fabric fail was forgetting to flip my pattern for the back part of Christmas stockings I was sewing with hard to find vintage fabric. Ended up with pieces which did not match up - aargghh!

  66. Love the orange and green! My biggest fabric fail was cutting directional fabric wrong so my animals went sideways instead of up and down.

  72. Someone else's fabric fail became an unexpected find for me. A friend had crosscut her batik lone star strip units 1/4" too short. She told me that she was so upset about it she was going to throw them away. When she saw the look of shock on my face she said, "You want them? You can have them. I sure as heck don't want them." They ended up being beautiful binding for the next quilt I made. -- soparkaveataoldotcom

  80. One of the my 'best' fails was a disappearing nine patch baby quilt I did in green pink and navy. It was awful when I laid it out. I finally picked up all the blocks and whacked them up with my rotary cutter and put them all back together improv style. Much better! I love your mustard clutch. Sorry your skirt didn't work out! But it feels good to make a save!

  81. One of my disastrous fails was when I slit a hole in my fabric with a seam ripper. I don't use them anymore because of this. I use a small pair of really sharp scissors now. The disasters help us learn.

  82. Ugh ... I just did it! I made the adorable Out and About Dress by Sew Caroline with a cheap sweater knit that had weird drape and stretch ... it made me look post-partum. It's fine to BE post-partum, but no one ever wants to highlight that!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Early in my efforts to sew I decided I wanted a khaki skirt and vest combo. Unfortunately I chose duck canvas... It looked like I was wearing a paper grocery bag that I cut into clothes. SO TERRIBLE.

My favorite is the original blue! Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Glad you could salvage the fabric! I LOVE the orange one and would love to win it - thanks for the chance!

I've had a few fabric fails while making bags/totes - makes me so mad because with interfacing and tons of stitching - it is hard to save the fabric in the end :-(

    ReplyDelete
  85. Biggest fabric fail...I picked a fabric for a dress I was testing. I LOVED the fabric but my eyes must have been wonky bc it ended up looking like a nighty....so that's what she did with it, wore it as a nightgown and loved it. So not a huge fail, but it wasn't the pretty dress fabric I'd hoped it'd be.

Love the blue one and the green one...it's a toss up :)

  86. I tried making my first Staple Dress with a very slippy satin. It almost worked, but I should have made a muslin first, so the satin dress didn't fit me at all and trying to fix it just made a huge mess.

    Love the orange one!!

  89. Nice save! Too bad the skirt didn't work out. I haven't had any major fabric fails yet, but I did buy 3 yards of C+S voile that I'm not too keen to make into any clothing because the print is a little too small scale. Maybe I'll destash it or use it for backing instead. Thanks for the chance to win one of these adorable clutches. I like the "Dottie" and the "Madrona Road" accents the best :)

  90. I love the orange clutch. I cant think of any fails at the moment, but I'm sure just typing that I will curse myself ;) Thanks for the chance to win!

  91. Oh man, I know what you mean about a failed project that hurts your wallet and your heart! This is a great way to turn it around! So far, my fails only involve measuring thrice and still cutting wrong. I think I must be cross-eyed sometimes! Oh, it just makes me SO MAD!

Thanks for the chance to win:)

  92. I have had many fabric fails although I'm not so sure it was the fabric. I have tried to make shirts for myself and they never fit right or look good. Skirts I have down and dresses for my daughter but not for me.
I love the blue and the green clutch both are pretty.

  93. Oh man...I have had so many fabric fails. the first one that comes to mind is cutting a top with the fabric for the sleeves upside down. blegh.

  95. Not washing some pink fabric in an early quilt - of course it bled when I washed it!

  96. My favorite is the blue. One of my biggest fails was this weekend - cutting some very expensive fabric the exact wrong direction. Too complicated to explain . . .

    ReplyDelete
  97. My biggest fabric fail was probably the time that I tried to make a shirt for one of my little sisters using one of there shirts as a pattern and forgot to add for the seam allowance.

  100. These are awesome Stephanie- and don't worry, we've all been there. When I get the chance- I will pass along the name of a skirt pattern I nabbed in Concord, NH ages ago that gives the same look you were going for without three layers of fabric. I made it once and I need to make it again! It was really easy. as far as fabric fails go- where do I start- I guess the worst was that mendocino quilt with the clamshells- I just let each row spread farther and farther apart until it really wasn't working- which resulted it being in a dust bowl under my son's bed for 3 years! Now it's all fixed and it's definitely one of my favorite quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  101. I made a chiffon top once. I've sewn with chiffon before successfully, but it was not working out for this top. I like the orange/red clutch!

  102. I like all the clutches! surprise me :)
My sad sewing fail was following a quiltalong, I trimmed an inch too small on a whole row of quilt blocks--BOO!

  104. I made myself a dress. A t-shirt on top, with an empire waisted skirt that I added. It's horrible. I cut it apart and remade it into a skirt, but it still is such an awkward length/fullness that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. If anything I'll cut it apart and reuse the fabric for something else! I also made a little stuffed sheep for my daughter - and followed the pattern, but it was just so small! She calls it a pig or an owl. So I remade it 150% bigger, and it looks 150% better! Just need to figure out what sort of face to put on it.

And all the clutches look great! That is so fabulous fabric, no wonder you wanted to wear it. I like the blue one, but would definitely be happy with any! Thanks for sharing your lemonade!

  105. Many years ago - when I first married - I wanted to sew a pair of shorts - I had no idea what I was doing - I didn't know anything about patterns when I finished the shorts were upside down and a skirt? Somehow that crotch seam just didn't get sewn. I love the red and the green clutch. By the way, I had the best time reading all these comments.

  111. The skirt might have been a failure, but the bags are just perfect. I would love to have the blue one. Thank you so much.
I am definitely not perfect so I have made tons of boo-boo's. My worst one was when I was cutting out some squares to make a quilt and I cut over half of them too small. Thankfully, I had enough fabric for a redo and the smaller squares were used for another project.

  112. Epic fail was cutting my pieces for a quilt using the finished size, which did not include seam allowances. Ugh!!!

  116. My fabric fail was a quilt I didn't zig zag stitch some flannel and instead straight stitched. When it hit the wash it completely fell apart. It was a commission and I had to admit I failed.

The bags are great! Orange or teal would be lovely.

  117. I don't think I have had any fabric fails, but I did snip a hole in an Easter dress I was working on on the last thread I had to clip. Talk about devastation!

  118. Love the yellow clutch especially! I snipped the backside of a piece of applique on a quilt once. Ended up having to add applique onto the applique!

    ReplyDelete
  119. I like the black or blue one! I love clutches like this! ALl kinds of things to put in them for safe keeping! My fabric failure..there have been many! I try to learn from them so I don't make the same mistake twice and I have to admit, (knock on wood!) that lately I haven't had any to speak of! All those little, "oh good grief, did I do that" mishaps, but they just serve to tell me "you need a break"!

  132. My worst fabric fail was for my step daughters halloween costume. The fabric was so slick and the weave was loose on the knit that the feed dogs on my machine kept grabbing at the fabric. I finally had to use my serger on the whole thing to get it to look halfway decent

  135. I've more than once been clipping corners or curves and accidentally pinched some of the good fabric underneath and clipped through that. I did that once on a nearly finished, very elaborate apron. I thought I might pass out.

  136. My biggest fail (besides the awful top I made in Home Ec) was a seminole patchwork vest. I had no experience working with pieces cut on the bias and was working with a rainbow of fabrics stitched together in rows, cut on the bias and then stitched together. I tried it twice and could not get the pieces to match up correctly. After that I was out of the fabric I was using and gave up. It was very sad.

  137. i love these clutches! i wouldn't have known they came from any kind of a 'fail.' awesome.

there was the time i tried to make a yoga skirt from a free pattern. i was pregnant and overweight to start with, and when the pattern said to double i did in spite of my mother cautioning otherwise. it seemed i was sewing for years, and trying to gather the thing was a nightmare. somewhere i have a ten-mile-wide partially sewn disaster of lovely knit. i need to find it and repurpose somehow, but it might be less fun to work with plain black knit?

thanks for the chance to win.

  139. I just cut into a quilt when trimming it. I was able to save it, but made myself so mad. I love them all, but would say the green or orange are my favorites

  140. What a fun save! I've had plenty of fabric fails, a few very similar. I tried sewing a sequence skirt - broke 2 needles, messed up the back seam so it looked like a permanent wedgie, and made it too small. I wasn't as motivated to sew after that so it just sat in a sad pile for a while. To be honest, I'm not sure what happened to it (oops). Love how you repurposed the fabric. I can't decide if I like the blue, orange, or yellow more. They're all fantastic!

  141. I tried to make some jammie pants for my husband without a pattern. They turned out awful!
    Love all the colors!

  142. I have so many fails it's hard to remember. Most of them consist of cutting my fabric wrong so my project is ruined or something like that. These bags are so cute!!

  143. they're all darling but I think the blue one is my favorite. I once made a shirt (no pattern, of course) out of some amazing knitted rayon. Then I realized it's too small for me AND I sewed the neckline in backwards. Unlike you, I haven't had the heart to salvage it yet, so it's in a pile of "do something with this someday" stuff.

  144. I just managed to cut the binding for my quilt a half inch short in the width department. It wasn't wide enough to fold all the way over...

  145. oh yes I have had several fabric fails and most are with trying to make clothes for my daughter, she is a little chunky and even though I make adjustments they just don't seem to fit. Your idea is brilliant I wonder if it would work on some voile that I used to make a dress for my daughter that doesn't fit.

  146. Probably my worst fail was making an entire quilt using an 1/8" seam allowance. Yeah - that didn't hold up so well... Lol!

    1. Oh! And I'd love the red, yellow, or blue clutch! They are wonderful!

  147. I won't tell you about the quilt stowed under the bed for two years. I finally threw it out last year. I am a lover of green so if I get lucky could I have that pretty one,

  148. Well pretty much every project I do has several fails! I am a total mess lol! I like to think of them as educational experiences! I like all the pouches!

  149. My biggest fabric fail was when I made a skirt for a friend, she tried it on, it was 2 inches too big, so I measured in 2 inches on each sideseam and whacked it off, thereby reducing it by 8 inches... and I was not a new sewer, either! I sewed it back together, attatched the zipper and waistband and everything and it wasn't till she tried it on that I realized what I'd done. I cried. :) That's the last time I've made anything fitted for someone else. :) sarah@forrussia.org

  152. love the blue!

And fabric fails? Usually it has to do with embroidery and ironing the pattern on backwards :/

  153. I recently just gave up and tossed a shirt I was sewing for my son. It went so wrong! Oh and the red would be my first pick.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Oh...how about stitching a king size quilt and realising as you put the finished strips tohgether that it is plain fugly?! Aaaargh. I love the blue and green ones. Great giveaway - thanks.

  155. oh i sewed myself a cardigan with very expensive wooly/jersey like fabric, and it was horrible. such a waste....

    ReplyDelete
  156. I once was putting the binding on a quilt using the binding tool, and I ended up cutting my fabric too short and let's just say, it did not end well. :) I love the blue!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Oh, I've had several fabric fails, one with a skirt, I threw it away because the fabric felt like plastic on the skin and I couldn't use it for quilting, one with a blouse, the fabric turned out completely transparent and I didn't find a bra that fit the neckline on the back, and one pair of pj pants with knit cotton fabric with chevrons - they are so ugly that I decided to wear them... LOL

  160. I have had a complete fail. I haven't been sewing very long and I was trying to sw some blocks. I did some pinwheels and they were great! But then I tried some star pattern and it was disastrous. Soooo disappointing. And a lot of fabric! But I'll be back at it after Christmas and figure those little things out! I love your bags that you made. I particularly favor the blue, then the red, but honestly, any of the colors would make me very happy. Thank you for this giveaway! Magistra13 at yahoo dot com

  161. I do fails quite often, but I try to correct them. I find it "the amazing way clothes express themselves". For example when I sew with the overlock and it "eats" a piece of fabric by mistake, OOOOPS!!!
I love them all, I think the red one is my favorite.
    Have a nice day!

  162. Almost every clothing item made for me is still on the "to finish" pile, also known as abandoned. It's hard to make something that's flattering and cute. And some fabrics, as much as I'd love to wear them, might just be made with another destiny in mind. A pillow or a curtain... Guess they just weren't meant to be on my ass...

Love the fabric though, maybe a blouse could have been cute... Love the pouches too though, the combo with gold is exceptionally pretty. :)

  164. I was sewing a stuffed animal for my son and I somehow cut a hole for the leg in the middle of the back... that is still a "work in progress" (i.e., shoved aside for more than a year). Your clutches are very cute, I love the red/orange topped version.
